CalSavers: Which California Employers Must Register, Who Is Exempt, and the 30-Day Steps
What changed
California employers that had at least one eligible California employee in the previous calendar year must register for CalSavers or claim an exemption. Exemptions cover employers that already sponsor a qualified retirement plan, businesses that closed or were sold, employers with no California employees, owner-only businesses, and government, religious and tribal employers. After registering, employers add employee information within 30 days, and employees then have a 30-day decision period.
Who it applies to
California employers with at least one eligible California employee in the previous calendar year that do not sponsor a qualified retirement plan.
What employers may need to do
- Register for CalSavers, or report your exemption through the employer portal if one applies.
- Add employee information within 30 days of registering, and add new hires within 30 days of their hire date.
- During employees' 30-day decision period, tell them you have joined CalSavers and share program information.
